One Thing About Traveling

Just a little side post about something I’ve just noticed about myself…

I love to travel.

No, that’s not the big thing I’ve just noticed about myself. No, what I’ve noticed is that I love to learn about the things I do while traveling.

Many times, I will do things without having a full understanding of what I’m doing, and might pick up a tidbit of information while I’m doing it, but once I do the thing and I come back to write about it, that’s when I REALLY learn.

While typing up my post about my most recent hike, I came to the realization that I did far more research about Stephen Bishop while writing the post than I did before, or during the hike.

The trail I was on had an informational sign at Old Guide’s Cemetery, and I glossed over it in the moment, took a picture of it and everything, but when I was writing the post, I looked up Old Guide’s Cemetery, read a bunch more about that, including the fact that Mr. Bishop is buried there, which then sent me on a mission to find out more about him. Now, this isn’t to say I am now an expert in Mr. Bishop’s entire life, his whole accomplishments or will I even retain the information I did pick up, but just the fact that I did the reading in attempt to learn was something.

After I came to this realization, I reflected back and realize, I do this a lot. I’ve done research on Niagara Falls, the Baseball Hall of Fame, University of Notre Dame, Fort Clatsop and Lewis and Clark’s expedition, the geology of Haystack Rock, information about Multnomah Falls, the fact that the FORMER world’s largest frying pan in Long Beach, Washington, has been surpassed by the new reigning champion in North Carolina… I’ve read about things that I never would have read about unless I was doing research to write about it here.

Which I think is pretty cool…
