Breaking the Border!

Welp, we’ve finally done it. We’ve finally committed to leaving the country!

A few weeks ago, our favorite band, Blue October, teased their fans with an announcement that… uh… a BIG announcement would be made on June 11 and to sign up for text messages from the band to be the first to find out.

I’d already been on their text messaging marketing list but I went ahead and “re-signed up” just in case.

The teaser suggested that we “pack [our] bags” and was set against a tropical looking backdrop, with sky, sea and palm trees. Speculation abound, theories were wondered- was this going to be a cruise? A destination concert?

Sure enough, Tuesday, June 11, the text message came. Blue October would be hosting an all-inclusive 4-day/4-night getaway at the Pueblo Bonito Pacifico resort in Cabo San Lucas, Mexico October 2 – 6.

Seeing those dates made me super nervous. We’re not scheduled to get back from our huge road trip until the end of September, only to have to turn around and head right to Mexico?

Then, I noticed it’s in October 2025.

Not this October.

Whew!

So, I immediately clicked the link and looked at my options, settling on an ocean view king room for… *gulp*… $2,400 per person.

Luckily, they only asked for $450 (per person) as a deposit and the rest will be paid every month for the next 11 months.

Then comes the fact that we will be leaving the country and neither of us has a passport. That is something we will get started with when we get home from our tour.

Then we have to arrange for a flight to Mexico. I figure, hey, if we’re doing this, might as well do it right, amirite? I looked into “premium” accommodations (apparently, close international flights don’t offer a true “First Class” but United Airlines offers a premium “Business Class” where you get all the amenities of First Class, it’s just called Business Class.

No one is booking flights in October of 2025 yet, so I just looked at flights to SJD airport for THIS October and was shocked at how reasonably priced it was. Under $2,500 for two passengers, round trip from DSM to Mexico. And we would each get two free checked bags, speed through the check-in and security lines, priority boarding and priority baggage claim on top of roomy seats and free actual food and alcohol.

This is an all-inclusive trip, so between the $4,800 for the resort and $2,500 for the flight, the only other things we would have to worry about would be gratuity and souvenirs/merch from the concert; $7,300 really isn’t bad for all that.

So, what exactly does this getaway entail?

Well, first, the entire resort is reserved for this event. We will only be surrounded by the band and their fans.

Then, we will have access to “multiple intimate live performances”, exclusive merchandise, pool parties, games, karaoke with the band and more.

I really wish I could express in words just how excited I am for this trip and, once again, having the deposit in and the commitment of the stay being paid for just solidifies the fact that this is something we are definitely going to do.

But, this is more than a year away. I have a LOOOOOONG time to stay excited about it.

In the meantime, we leave tomorrow (Thursday, June 13) for the next leg of our summer tour. We’ll be off to Oregon.

Stay tuned!

-Phil
